Connectivity as we know it is about to change. The Starlink project by SpaceX is set to transform our access to the internet, providing high-quality, fast, and seamless connectivity to its users, no matter where in the world they might be.
By being able to offer customers high-speed internet in even the remotest of locations, it will allow a greater level of connectivity, particularly for those working in the logistics and transport industry.
What is Starlink?
Announced in January 2015, Starlink is aiming to change the way the world connects to the internet. To do this, Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is launching a series of satellites into low orbit, which will then be able to relay information back to receivers on the ground across the globe which act as a gateway for the internet connection. Users will be able to connect to Starlink internet service using flat user terminals the size of a pizza box.
Unlike existing internet satellites, which orbit at over 20,000 miles above the earth, the Starlink satellites fly much closer; ensuring a faster and more secure connection. Eventually planning on having 12,000 satellites in a mega constellation, 2020 has seen Starlink ramp up delivery with 540 satellites currently in orbit as of June.
The vacuum of space means information can be sent 47% faster than through fiber-optic cables, which will transform the speeds and connection coverage we currently enjoy.
How Starlink will transform logistics and transportation
This increased connectivity will ensure those working in the logistics and transportation industries will be able to enjoy seamless internet access across their fleet and devices no matter where in the world their job takes them.
This incredible new technology will mean that long-haul flights, long-distance trucking, and international cruise and cargo ships will have access to fast and affordable internet. With full and uninterrupted coverage, even when in traditional areas of no coverage or through extreme weather conditions, it means workers and drivers are able to remain connected with their colleagues and loved ones. Starlink will also play a key role in the advancement of GPS Vehicle Tracking & Fleet Management Industry.
One of the biggest benefits is that Starlink is the crucial first step to allowing truly autonomous vehicles. Currently, an autonomous vehicle transfers 500 times more data than a smartphone, which means that too many vehicles would overload the current internet system. Starlink, however, with its incredible speed and capabilities, would help to absorb this demand.
